VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN NIGERIA
This topic is a topic that many women dread to talk about but it’s very much prevalent in our society. It was in existence in the olden days but it’s on the increase now because wickedness is on the increase now as predicted by the holy book.

WHAT IS VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN?
It is a violation of human Rights of women and a form of discrimination against women. It is also all acts of gender-based violence that result in physical, sexual, psychological or economic harm or suffering to women
Violence against a woman can come in the form of a threat, coercion or deprivation of liberty, rape, acid attack, molestation, wife beating and corporal punishment. It is an act of intimidation, physical, verbal, or emotional abuse.
WHAT AMOUNTS TO VIOLENT ACTIONS AGAINST WOMEN?
Violence against women takes many forms including physical, sexual, emotional, and mental. Traditionally, domestic violence is committed against females. Common forms of violence against woman in Nigeria are rape, acid attacks, molestation, wife beating, and corporal punishment etc.
WHAT CAUSES THIS VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN?
Basically what causes this violence against women is the low self-esteem of the man, when the man feels that a woman has better advantage over him in terms of connection, finance and otherwise. Another cause is loss of job, lack of finances in the home, psychological abnormality and animalistic sex urge.
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE REMEDY TO THIS ACT
The ONLY remedy to this menace is to stay away from such person. If it’s in a marriage separation is the remedy. If it’s in a relationship stay away and cut yourself off from such person to avoid further harm or even death.
LAWS / ENACTMENT THAT PROHIBITS THESE PRACTICES
The Rights of every individual both male and female in Nigeria has been provided for in our CONSTITUTION and one of the Rights is provided for in Section 34 of the Constitution. This Section covers every act of violence against women.
By section 34 of the 1999 Constitution of the FRN as amended it provides thus
- Every individual is entitled to respect for the dignity of his person and accordingly-
- No person shall be subjected to torture or inhuman or degrading treatment
- No person shall be held in slavery or servitude; and
- No person shall be required to perform forced or compulsory labour …….
By Order II (1) of the Fundamental Rights (Enforcement Procedure) Rules 2009 it provides that “Any person who alleges that any of the Fundamental Rights provided for in the constitution or……………….to which he is entitled, has been, is being, or likely to be infringed, may apply to the court in the State where the infringement occurs or is likely to occur for redress:……………
